How often should I water my garden?

Although this is perhaps the most commonly asked gardening question, there’s not one simple, all-encompassing answer. But providing the appropriate amount of water is essential to helping your garden flourish from the get-go while over- or under-watering can create issues.

The frequency you should water your plants, flowers, shrubs or trees depends on several factors, such as: the season, the location’s climate, measure of yearly rainfall, soil type and where your plants are placed in the garden. If they are indoor plants, they would require much less watering.

With these factors in mind, you can better understand how to water your garden’s unique collection. Some good practices to make sure you’re applying the right amount of water.

1) Read and Save Labels – When you purchase a seed or a starter plant, make sure you read their individual labels and follow their watering directions. It’s also critical to know if the plant is tolerant to dry conditions or if more water is needed. The plants that require moist soil need watered more frequently. Lastly, make sure you save your labels for reference.

2) Test Soil Moisture – To test the dampness of your soil, poke your finger about one inch deep near the plant. If the soil is dry, you’ll need to deeply water the area. If the soil still feels moist, wait until it feels dry to water. For more information on watering.
